Path analysis of phenotypic traits in young cacao plants under drought conditions

Abstract: Drought is worldwide considered one of the most limiting factors of Theobroma cacao production, which can be intensified by global climate changes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the phenotypic correlation among morphological characteristics of cacao progenies submitted to irrigation and drought conditions and their partitions into direct and indirect effects. Path analysis with phenotypic plasticity index was used as criteria for estimation of basic and explanatory variables. The experiment was conduc… Show more

“…In plant breeding, sufficient genetic variation is a condition for the selection of agronomically desirable genotypes, especially of traits highly correlated with each other and with yield (Khan et al, 2017). Thus, in the selection process, it is important to knowledge about the relationships between characteristics of interest, which can be done by determining the correlations between phenotypic characters (Santos et al, 2018). Sultana et al (2015) affirm that the path analysis for supporting the development of varieties allows determining the direct and indirect effects of physical characteristics of fruits with the yield.…”

“…Positive correlation indicates increasing of value in some characters will followed increasing of value in other related characters. Refer to Santos et al (2018), leaf area has positive correlation to biomass characters. This result was related to positive correlation of root volume to biomass related characters.…”

“…Correlation had related to sink and source of plant mechanism. Plant in drought condition will optimize sink and source to maintain of photoassimilate and related to adaptability response by physiological and morphological mechanism (Santos et al, 2018).…”

“…Since was conceived for multi-environment trial analysis, the function can be used to pass grouped data allowing, for example, that a path analysis or a canonical correlation be computed within each level of a factor, as shown in Santos et al (2018). For more details, please, refer to Appendix S1, item 7.…”
