The aim of this study was to examine the direct, indirect and total effects of some body measurements on body weight of Saanen kids by using path analysis. For this aim, relationship between body weight (BW) and four morpho-biometrical traits [chest girth (CG), height at withers (HW), height at sacrum (HS) and body length (BL)]were studied in 75 Saanen kids at one month of age using path analysis. However HW trait was excluded from analyze because of its multicollinearity with HS. The effects of CG, HS and BL on BW were found statistically significant. BL was found as variable with highest indirect effect (0.521) on BW. The direct effect of CG was higher than HS and BL. The total effect of BL was higher than those of HS and CG. These results showed that chest girth could be used to estimate the body weight of Saanen kids for practical purposes as well as for selection purposes.

Using path analysis to predict bodyweight from body measurements of goats and sheep of communal rangelands in Botswana

The objective of this study was to determine the practicality of using linear body measurement traits to predict live weight of goats and sheep under communal grazing in three districts of Botswana, namely Central, Kweneng, and Kgalagadi. Pairwise (Pearson) correlations were estimated using bodyweight (BW) and morphological trait measurements, namely heart girth (HG), shoulder height (SH), and body condition score (BCS) for a sample of 1447 goats and 588 sheep. These ranged from 0.19 to 0.94 for goats and 0.44 to 0.94 for sheep, and were statistically significant. In both animals, regardless of sex, the highest positive correlations were found between BW and HG, followed by BW and SH, then BW and BCS. The direct and indirect relationship between BW and morphological traits using a path analysis approach were also estimated. This analysis suggested that the direct effect of HG on BW was higher at 0.761 for male and 0.662 for female goats, respectively. Similarly, the direct effect of HG on BW was higher among sheep at 0.764 for males and 0.882 for females. The direct effects of SH in all the animals were also positively influenced by BW. It was concluded that among these three morphological traits, the most valuable for estimating the BW for goats and sheep in Botswana is HG, followed by SH. BCS was found non-significant. Path analysis therefore has an advantage over previous empirical studies by providing more detailed information on the relationships (direct and indirect) between these variables. A further implication of this study is that a conversion table could be constructed to help smallholder farmers to estimate the live weight of their sheep and goats from linear measurements. This would aid in the management and marketing of their livestock.

The influencing factors of Harbin (China) residents’ satisfaction with municipal solid waste treatment

China is experiencing an enormous increase in municipal household solid waste (MHSW) generation and is facing multiple problems associated with the treatment of MHSW. This paper analyses factors affecting residents’ satisfaction with MHSW treatment performance. Six factors were identified by the Delphi method: (a) pick-up frequency by waste collection vehicles, (b) fund supply situation, (c) charging standard for waste treatment, (d) waste bin arrangement, (e) laws and regulations, (f) publicity and education. We examine the significance of these six influencing factors, estimating binary logistic regression models. Data for this study are derived from the survey responses of 469 households in Harbin, one of the largest cities in northeast China. The results indicate that ‘pick-up frequency by waste collection vehicles’ is ranked the first and most important determinant of Harbin residents’ satisfaction with MHSW treatment; this is closely followed by ‘publicity and education’. The third and fourth significant influencing factors, respectively, are ‘fund supply situation’ and ‘charging standard for waste treatment’. The last two factors are ‘laws and regulations’ and ‘waste bin arrangement’. By understanding the influence of various factors on residents’ satisfaction, this study aims to help in designing an effective waste management system to reduce the cost of MHSW management, and to raise the residents’ satisfaction with municipal solid waste treatment. Based on the research findings, we advocate that establishing a reasonable waste transport (pick-up) system as well as strengthening publicity and education of waste management are key to improving residents’ satisfaction with the MHSW treatment performance.
