Patent surrogate extraction and evaluation in the context of patent mapping

Abstract: Patent documents contain important research results. They are often collectively analyzed and organized in a visual way to support decision making. However, they are lengthy and rich in technical terminology, and thus require a lot of human effort for analysis. Automatic tools for assisting patent engineers or decision makers in patent analysis are in great demand. This paper describes a summarization method for patent surrogate extraction, intended to efficiently and effectively support patent mapping, which … Show more

“…ere are many application domains where ES techniques are used, for instance, summaries of websites, patents records, and news stories [25,26]. Tseng et al [27] proposed a feature based summarization method for patents and used several features like cue phrases and sentence location to identify the relevant sentences. Trappey et al [28] combined ontology tree structure and TF-IDF techniques to extract the keywords for selection of salient sentences from patent documents; then clustering technique is applied to group salient sentences to form a summary.…”

“…Thus, the patent map plays an important role in formulating strategies because it provides practical and intuitive information [49]. Because text mining technology can be applied to unstructured data processing to build patent maps, patent maps can effectively convey potentially valuable knowledge and explicit information from patents [21,50]. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a patent map because it provides valuable information in a graphical manner, helping people to explore technological opportunities and avoid technological risks.…”
