Patency Capsule Tolerability in School-Aged Children

Abstract: Background: A patency capsule (PC) can help predict capsule endoscope (CE) retention; however, PC tolerability is unknown in children. We retrospectively evaluated PC tolerability in school-aged children. Methods: Sixty-one patients (median age, 12.9 years; range 7.4-17.3 years) who underwent PC examination were analyzed for occurrence and determinants of ingestion difficulty and relationships between ingestion of the 2 capsules. We defined ingestion difficulty as taking 30 min or more, or failure, to ingest t… Show more

“…To assess the small intestinal patency and predict the retention, a dissolving Pill Cam patency capsule was released in 2012. Its tolerability in children has not been guaranteed yet though the safety is confirmed in adults [3]. The limitation of CE is its inability to obtain biopsies and provide endoscopic treatments.…”

“…We observed no issues confirming functional patency using the tag-less PPC and expect that the Agile TM Patency Capsule will be replaced with the PPC in the future globally. Previous published studies of the PPC have basically investigated its usefulness for confirming patency at 30-33 h after ingestion [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. As far as we know, our study is the only study that has investigated the clinical course from 30 to 72 h after ingestion of the tagless PPC.…”

“…To investigate the lesion responsible for the patient's protein‐losing enteropathy, small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) was planned. To exclude potential retention of the SBCE capsule, intestinal patency was examined by using a dissolvable patency capsule, as previously described 1 .…”
