Patellar metastasis from primary tumor (Review)

Abstract: Abstract. Although bone tumors are frequently located in the knee area, primary tumors of the patella are rare and patellar metastases are even rarer. Knee pain is the most common complaint of patients with patellar metastases. Owing to the low incidence of patellar metastases, misdiagnosis is not unusual. The present review analyzes ~44 cases of patellar metastases originating from distinct primary sites. Reports of malignant tumors of the lung and kidney metastasizing to the patella were more common than tho… Show more

“…Giant cell tumors are estimated to compose about 33% of all patellar tumors, while Chondroblastoma's compose roughly about 16% of all patellar tumors [8]. Patellar metastases are even rarer compared to primary tumors of patella [10]. A review of the reported cases from 1960 to 2016 has only resulted in 44 patellar metasets cases [10].…”

Of these metastases cases bone metastases disease originating from the lungs have been reported to be the leading cause with 17 reported cases [10].…”

“…[ 3 ] Patella bone can be site of primary bone tumor apart from metastatic spread from various cancers such as the breast, lung, kidney, esophagus, and cervix along with its involvement in multiple myeloma. [ 5 6 ] Absence of lytic-sclerotic component, erosions, osteophytes, and sclerosis on CT images along with fluid collection in the suprapatellar space in our case excludes mitotic disease, osteomyelitis, osteoarthritis, and Paget's disease favoring a diagnosis of suprapatellar bursitis. In addition, the absence of tenderness over the patella clinically excludes patellar osteomyelitis in our case.…”

“…Some experts believe there is no survival advantage by performing a wide resec-tion in place of intralesional curettage and local stabilization. 2 The use of radiotherapy and bisphosphonates has also been advocated.…”
