Patellar Groove Replacement in a Cat

Abstract: The aim of this study was to report patellar groove replacement in a 6-year-old domestic short hair cat with chronic unilateral pelvic limb lameness and severe femoro-patellar osteoarthritis due to medial patellar luxation. This study is a case report. Computed tomographic scan of the affected limb revealed marked periarticular osteophytosis, medial trochlear ridge erosion, marked flattening of femoral trochlea, ectopic pseudo-trochlear groove, and medial patellar luxation. Femoral trochlear ostectomy with pat… Show more

“…8,11 Complications, such as osteochondral wedge dislodgment or fracture of the trochlear ridge, have been described. 9,[12][13][14][15] Other surgical procedure such as patellar groove replacement (PGR; Kyon, Zurich, Switzerland) and Ridgestop (Orthomed, Huddersfield, United Kingdom) have been proposed in dogs 16,17 and cats 18,19 to reshape the whole femoral trochlea or the femoral trochlear ridge, respectively. Ridgestop consists of a polyethylene ridge, which is held in place with cortical screws.…”

“…Tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT), recession trochleoplasties (wedge or block), soft tissue techniques, and patellar groove replacement have been described to treat feline patellar luxation. 1,4,[14][15][16] Partial parasagittal patellectomy has also been described as a supplemental technique to block recession trochleoplasty, considering cats' naturally wide patella. 14,17,18 A short case series described a semicylindrical trochleoplasty alternative in five feline stifles to accommodate the wide feline patella.…”

“… 14 Of these, the most common major complication was implant related (when TTT was utilized), and the overall patellar reluxation rate across the various MPL reparative procedures performed was 5%. 14 Other techniques, such as sulcal ridge prostheses 16 and patellar groove replacement (PGR), 17 have rarely been adapted for use in cats.…”
