Patella fracture following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A case report

Abstract: Fracture of patella after ACL reconstruction is due to several reasons: size and shape of the graft, technique of its taking, disturbed patellar blood supply, incomplete filling of patella defect after graft taking, and inappropriate postoperative rehabilitation. If a patellar fracture occurs after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, the best treatment is firm osteosynthesis, which enables bone healing and immediate continuation of the previously resumed rehabilitation program. However, this complicatio… Show more

“…Ruptures of patellar ligament occur in patients under the age of forty, while quadriceps tendon ruptures occur in older patients [1,2,20,21]. Although they can happen in young population [6,7], as it was the case in 13% of our sample, the greatest risk is in the fifth and the sixth decades of life [2,3,22,23].…”

“…Rare iatrogenic cases that have been reported are: rupture after total knee arthroplasty [10,26], lateral retinacular release [11], meniscectomy [12], anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with central-third patellar tendon graft [13,20], local steroid injections [14], knee and patellar dislocations [23]. We had one case of tendon rupture after total knee arthroplasty.…”

“…A knee injury, especially of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), has become more frequent in recent years as a result of increased sport activity, work engagement and involvement in traffic acci-dents [1]. Because of the additional damage to the soft tissue and bony structures of the knee and early development of secondary degenerative changes, an injury of ACL is the "beginning of the end of the knee" [2]. These injuries are a significant epidemiological problem, especially because they usually occur to young people who are sport and work active [2].…”

These injuries are a significant epidemiological problem, especially because they usually occur to young people who are sport and work active [2]. The nature of ACL injuries is multifactorial and the risk factors are divided into external and internal, as well as into changing and unchanging factors.…”
