Patchouli virus X, a new potexvirus from Pogostemon clabin

Abstract: SummaryThis work describes a potexvirus obtained from patchouli, Pogostemon clabin, collected in São Paulo, Brazil in 1992. The plants showed mosaic and were infected by a potyvirus and a potexvirus. The potexvirus had a host range limited to Amaranthaceae, Solanaceae and Labiatae and was named Patchouli virus X (PatVX). PatVX was not transmitted by scissors pruning, in tobacco seeds or by Myzus nicotinae. The virus was purified and a specific antiserum with a titre great than 1:512 000 in dot‐ELISA was produc… Show more

“…Earlier preliminary work has been done on viral diseases of patchouli except in three reports; Patchouli Virus X [3] , Patchouli mild mosaic virus ( PaMMV ) [4] and PStV [5] where the virus was identified at the species level and partially or fully sequenced. The remaining studies were disease reports, three from India [11] , [12] , [13] .…”

“…Some viruses naturally infecting patchouli have already been completely or partially characterized ( Table 1 ). Patchouli virus X ( PatVX ) [3] , Patchouli mild mosaic virus ( PaMMV ) [4] and Peanut stripe virus ( PStV) [5] have been characterized and sequenced. There are other reports in which viruses either have been characterized at the preliminary level or published as disease reports; e.g., potexvirus [6] , [7] , patchouli mottle virus ( PaMoV ) [4] , Pepper ring spot virus ( PRV ) [8] , Patchouli mosaic virus ( PaMV ) [9] , Tobacco necrosis virus ( TNV ) - a presumed Rhabdovirus [10] and yellow mosaic of Patchouli [11] , [12] , [13] .…”
