Pasture management and greenhouse gases emissions

Abstract: Pastures are important environments worldwide because they offer many ecosystem services and sustain meat and milk production. However, pastures ecosystems are responsible for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission. The major GHGs include CO2, CH4, and N2O. The present review summarizes GHG emission from pasture ecosystems and discusses strategies to mitigate this problem. In pastures, emissions originate from animal excretion, fertilization, and organic matter decomposition. Emissions of specific gases can be measured… Show more

“…The difference between systems in CP and, potentially, lignin also would likely be a factor in animal performance. Moreover, the silvopastoral systems are known to provide thermal comfort to the animal [1], land use efficiency, and diversification of income sources within the property [23,24]. In this study, we did not measure the quality and quantity of sunlight.…”

“…An ammonia absorber system was installed in the chamber composed of a foam slide 0.3 cm thick, 2.5 cm wide, and 25 cm long and soaked with an acid solution (H 2 SO 4 ) plus glycerin (2% v/v) inside a container with a volume of 50 mL, hanging vertically. The N-NH 3 retained in foam was determined by distillation and titration, according to the Kjeldahl method [46].…”

“…However, none of the evaluated insecticides have proven completely successful in controlling this curculionid due to the larvae's habits and the high level of adult flight [12,13]. Moreover, the use of these synthetic products has been linked to environmental degradation, the development of resistance, and chemical residues [1,8,9]. Hence, there is global interest in utilizing environmentally friendly alternative pest control methods, such as fungal endophytes (Epichloë/Neotyphodium spp.…”

“…Pastures play a crucial role globally, providing various ecosystem services and sustaining meat and milk production [ 1 ]. Therefore, one of the most critical factors influencing beef and dairy production in Chile and worldwide is the careful selection of cultivars, or combinations of both forage grasses and legumes, to ensure high yields and pasture quality related to nutritional values for animals.…”
