Past and future trends of Egypt’s water consumption and its sources

Abstract: For millennia the Nile supplied Egypt with more water than needed. As the population grew and the economy expanded, demand on water increased accordingly. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis to reconstruct how total demand on water outstripped supply of the Nile water in the late 1970s, starting from a surplus of about 20 km3 per year in the 1960s leading to a deficit of about 40 km3 per year by the late 2010s. The gap is satisfied by import of virtual water. The role of economic growth in driving per ca… Show more

“…The purpose of attributing critical importance to water use efficiency is to resolve the growing concern of nation‐wide water imbalance. The demand has far outstripped the renewable water supply over the past decades, and the deficit is covered by alternative water sources (Abu Zeid, 1992; Radwan, 1997; Abdin & Gaafar, 2009; Omar & Moussa, 2016; El‐Rawy et al, 2019; Nikiel & Eltahir, 2021). Increasing irrigation efficiency and water productivity are potential strategies to respond to the concepts of spatially and temporarily varying water scarcity (Sharma et al, 2015; Linstead, 2018; Jagermeyr, 2020).…”

“…The interesting point here is that as considerable parts of agricultural and other products end up as waste, a considerable volume of water is being wasted. This is what we need to think about; particularly as virtual water use in Egypt is growing each year (Nikiel and Elfatih 2021).…”

“…Egypt -the most populous and arid of the Nile River riparian -is witnessing one of the highest water budget deficits worldwide, exceeding 40 BCM/year (Nikiel and Eltahir 2021). Currently, the Nile River represents the primary source of freshwater (i.e., more than 97%) for more than 100 million Egyptians, with a water share of 55.5 billion cubic meters per year (BCM/year) (El-Saadawy et al 2020).…”
