Old man’s beard is a woody liana that has become an invasive weed in many areas of its introduction, through its vigorous spread and negative impacts on the tree hosts it climbs. Control techniques that improve precision and reduce non-target damage are increasingly preferred for weed control yet have not been compared in published research for use against old man’s beard. Field experiments in New Zealand were conducted to: 1) assess targeted herbicide techniques for control of its climbing stems when growing among trees and 2) assess foliar herbicides for control of creeping stems in ruderal sites. For climbing stems, triclopyr in oil was applied around the circumference of woody stems near their base, which was compared with cutting the stems and applying concentrated glyphosate gel (45% ai) to each cut end. Herbicides were applied in autumn directly to individual stem bases of the weed, thereby protecting tree hosts and other non-target vegetation. The basal application of triclopyr to intact stems was highly effective (> 95% mortality) with no damage to nearby trees noted. The glyphosate gel applications to cut stems was less effective (56% mortality by 2 years after treatment). For creeping stems in grass-dominated ruderal sites, selective foliar herbicide sprays had not been previously compared side-by-side for control of old man’s beard. Three selective sprays that do not damage existing grass cover were applied in autumn at their recommended rates: 1) metsulfuron; 2) triclopyr; and 3) a mixture of triclopyr, picloram, and aminopyralid. All herbicide treatments gave effective control, although metsulfuron had a negative effect on grass vigour which might allow new establishment of old man’s beard seedlings by competitive release. These results provide effective options that reduce non-target damage for control of both climbing and creeping old man’s beard stems.

In the cities, remnants of the vegetation that originally occupied these areas can be found. Exotic species have established in these relicts, and therefore these spaces require management aimed at recovering native vegetation. In this study, we evaluated the impact of the removing exotic species on the floristic composition of the remnants of an oak forest. We compared the abundance/cover and composition of exotic plants in a forest that has been managed through citizen participation with that of reference forests (both with remnants, but the former without protection and the latter with protection). We established 48 sampling sites to characterize the vegetation in three strata (upper, middle, and low) and monitored changes in composition in managed forest sites for a period of 3 years. The results indicate that the managed forest hosts different species than those found in the reference forests, with lower abundance and cover of exotic plants in the upper and lower strata. Regarding temporal changes, we observed shifts in floristic composition before and after management activities, and a reduction in the cover of exotic species before and after management, with consistently low cover three years later. This underscores the effectiveness of citizen-led management activities, offering a viable alternative for restoring native vegetation in urban environments.
