Passive Mobile Data for Studying Seasonal Tourism Mobilities: An Application in a Mediterranean Coastal Destination

Abstract: The article uses passive mobile data to analyse the complex mobilities that occur in a coastal region characterised by seasonal patterns of tourism activity. A large volume of data generated by mobile phone users has been selected and processed to subsequently display the information in the form of visualisations that are useful for transport and tourism research, policy, and practice. More specifically, the analysis consisted of four steps: (1) a dataset containing records for four days—two on summer days and… Show more

“…However, when dealing with large datasets, line maps can become cluttered and difficult to interpret. In such situations, it is recommended to utilize flow maps instead (Zaragozí, Trilles, and Gutiérrez, 2021), as they provide a clear representation of the flow between various destinations, however, unlike line maps, do not copy, for example, the road network. For both line maps and flow maps, we can add arrows to show the direction of travel.…”

“…Since conventional accommodation statistics hide information on the spatio-temporal behaviour of tourists and traditional survey data are difficult to obtain, the use of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), especially mobile-phone positioning data seems to be inevitable. Mobile Positioning Data (MPD) collected and stored by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) provide useful data sources for the spatio-temporal analysis of human mobility, including tourism (Zaragozí, Trilles and Gutiérrez, 2021). Characteristics of these data make it possible to differentiate not only visitors from local populations, but also international visitors from domestic tourists at any geographical scale.…”

“…This is because island states are mainly destinations for 3S (sun, sea, sand) tourism. Thus, accessible tourism can be an alternative tourism market for island states that are under pressure from mass tourism [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63]. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Eastern Mediterranean.…”
