Depending on the heat content and compression ignition (CI) engine combustion, biodiesel is a viable substitute fuel. Biodiesel is an oxygenated, safe, sulfur-free, biodegradable, and renewable fuel. It may be utilized in CI engines in any combination with diesel fuel without requiring the engine to be significantly modified. Many research studies have been made with several biodiesels as diesel substitutes, including Pongamia pinnata, Jatropha curcas, Mangifera indica, and Madhuca longifolia. The topic of the current review is the potential of renewable fuels to outperform diesel fuel in terms of performance, combustion, and emission characteristics. In the present study, CI engines are fueled with biodiesels made from Man. indica, Mad. longifolia, and pongamia seed oil. Adopting low heat rejection (LHR) mode CI engines and adding an antioxidant agent in addition to the biodiesel blends may resolve the issue of these biodiesels’ poorer performance and increased NO emission. Both these additions may provide positive approaches in both performance and emission.

The environmental sustainability of agricultural and industrial vehicles, as well as of the transportation sector, represents one of the most critical challenges to the sustainable development of a nation. In recent decades, compression-ignition engines have been widely used in on-road and off-road vehicles due to their better fuel economy, autonomy, compactness, and mechanical performance (spec. the high torque values). Due to the consistent environmental impact of fossil fuels, scientists are searching for alternative energy sources while preserving the beneficial features of diesel engines. The utilization of blends of diesel fuel, biodiesel, and bioethanol fuel (referred to as “ternary blends”) is among the most promising solutions for replacing fossil fuels in the near term, allowing, at the same time, us to continue using existing vehicles until new technologies are developed, consolidated and adapted to the agricultural and industrial sector. These ternary blends can lower exhaust emissions without creating major problems for existing fuel-feeding systems, typically designed for low-viscosity fossil fuels. One of the concerns in using liquid biofuels, specifically biodiesel, is the high chemical affinity with conventional and bio-based lubricants, so the main parameters of lubricants can vary significantly after a long operation of the engine. The comprehensive literature review presented in this article delves into the technical challenges, the main research pathways, and the potential solutions associated with the utilization of biofuels. Additionally, it investigates the emerging application of nanoparticles as additives in lubricants and biofuels, highlighting their valuable potential. This study also discusses the potential implementation of bio-ethanol in ternary blends, offering a promising avenue for reducing reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining engine efficiency.

The fossil fuels are precursors of a large share of pollutants gas emissions into atmosphere. Thus, there is a growing demand for renewable and less polluting energy sources. The biodiesel represents a promising alternative for Brazilian and global energy matrices diversification as well as for reducing the environmental impacts of internal combustion engines. However, the biodiesel using can generate some technical problems associated with its lower stability and greater susceptibility to degradation in relation to petroleum diesel. As an alternative to the aforementioned problems, additives improve the physicochemical properties maintenance for biodiesel and its blends with mineral diesel, during storage and transport operations. This work includes the structural, energetic and reactional analysis associated to a chalcone molecule that presented a potential application as additive for diesel/biodiesel blends. Stability tests of S10 B20 diesel blended with C18H18O4 chalcone, during storage for 140 days, indicated an increase of up 50% in the accelerated oxidation stability time by modified Rancimat test method in relation to lower concentrations of same compound, according to data extracted from literature. The GAP, calculated from HOMO and LUMO energy also indicate high reactional stability for C18H18O4, confirming its antioxidant potential and being in accordance with some information for other antioxidant compounds, recommended like fuel and oils antioxidant additives. The results also indicated antibacterial activity associated to C18H18O4 chalcone.
