Passenger choice attributes in choosing a secondary airport: A study of passenger attributes in using Lanseria International Airport

Abstract: Background: The economic deregulation of the airline industry in South Africa in 1991 was a landmark event and brought about various changes in the air transport market, both locally and internationally. One important after-effect of deregulation was the entry of low-cost carriers (LCCs) in 2001, which increased competition in the market and offered passengers the freedom to choose between full-cost carriers and LCCs. It is generally accepted that LCCs have been very successful across the globe, and the main r… Show more

“…[21] As shown, the best result and, at the same time, the lowest value in dB were recorded for Measuring Point 2 (LAeq, LT = 43.2 dB), while the highest value was recorded for Measuring Point 5 and Measuring Point 8 , both with the same value (LAeq, LT = 56.8 dB). At all points, the noise limit was observed, so the standard was maintained.…”

“…Aircraft noise generated by aircraft engines during flight operations (mainly take-offs and landings) depends on many factors [2,21]. The most important is the volume of air traffic, expressed in the number of daily flight operations.…”

“…Opening a new connection and increasing passenger numbers at small regional airports requires time and is high cost and high-risk related. It is therefore understandable that LCCs require airport or region participation to reduce risks (Kriel & Walters, 2016). Conversely at LCC3 airports the LCCs benefit from mature, dense and stable markets but must face different problems; in particular airport capacity, slot coordination which have an impact on regularity of connections.…”

“…Among the larger airports, Johannesburg (OR Tambo International Airport, JNB) has increased less quickly, which suggests less concentrated traffic than before. Actually, Johannesburg's city is now served by a second airport, namely Lanseria ( Kriel and Walters, 2016 5 ). If one considers the two airports jointly, Johannesburg experienced an 86-% increase in seat capacity.…”
