Parvalbumin-Positive Basket Interneurons in Monkey and Rat Prefrontal Cortex

Abstract: Differences in the developmental origin and relative proportions of biochemically distinct classes of cortical neurons have been found between rodents and primates. In addition, species differences in the properties of certain cell types, such as neurogliaform cells, have also been reported. Consequently, in this study we compared the anatomical and physiological properties of parvalbumin (PV)-positive basket interneurons in the prefrontal cortex of macaque monkeys and rats. The somal size, total dendritic len… Show more

“…Interneurons have also been studied in other species beside rodents. Although similar morphological features and marker expression have been observed in primates, some differences in electrophysiological properties have been reported between rats and monkeys (Povysheva et al, 2007; Povysheva et al, 2008; Zaitsev et al, 2005; Zaitsev et al, 2009). It seems that overall, the same basic interneuron subtypes exist across most mammalian species studied (DeFelipe, 2002).…”

“…Some of the electrophysiological parameters from all monkey and rat FS BCs and from all monkey ChCs were published previously [18], [20]. Here, in addition, a new critical electrophysiological parameter, medium afterhyperpolarization (mAHP) amplitude, was measured in the recordings from the interneurons.…”

“…Then, the AR coefficient was estimated from the linear regression of AR versus current at 60 pA above rheobase. The level of 60 pA above rheobase was chosen for estimation of frequency and AR coefficient since it was the lowest stimulation current intensity to produce relatively regular firing in rat FS BCs with very few quiescent periods [20].…”

“…In monkey and rat prefrontal cortex, basket cells also do not plateau, almost linearly increasing firing frequency (Povysheva et al, 2008). On the other hand, pyramidal cells in mouse neocortex plateau below gamma band frequency, even after application of very high amplitude current steps (600–1000 pA; Zhou et al, 2010).…”
