Partnerships, Processes, and Outcomes: A Health Equity–Focused Scoping Meta-Review of Community-Engaged Scholarship

Abstract: In recent decades, there has been remarkable growth in scholarship examining the usefulness of community-engaged research (CEnR) and community-based participatory research (CBPR) for eliminating health inequities. This article seeks to synthesize the extant literature of systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and other related reviews regarding the context, processes, and research designs and interventions underlying CEnR that optimize its effectiveness. Through a scoping review, we have utilized an empirically d… Show more

“…Community-engaged research (CEnR) partnerships are uniquely positioned to operationalize pandemic risk communication frameworks among vulnerable populations. CEnR partnerships, characterized by collaboration between community members and researchers through all phases of research, are increasingly ubiquitous in the United States across disciplines, population groups, and geography [7]. These partnerships have access to large networks of vulnerable groups through their focus on health equity, and community partners have organizational and technical capacity for interfacing with these populations in a research and evaluation context [8].…”

“…Community-engaged research (CEnR) is "a process of working collaboratively with groups of people who are affiliated by geographic proximity, special interests, or similar situations with respect to issues affecting their well-being," 15 and it can be conceived as an umbrella term to include community participatory and CEnR. 16 The importance of CEnR was underscored by a 2013 Institute of Medicine report that recommended direct incorporation of community voice in all aspects of translational research. 17 Different CEnR approaches can be conceived as occurring across a continuum from low levels of engagement (eg, informing a community about an intervention) to co-ownership (eg, all facets of an intervention are co-led by community and academic partners).…”

“…Critical to the design of effective CEnR interventions are bidirectional communication, colearning, and understanding of unmet needs and existing assets. 3 Mayo Clinic CEnR partnerships have observed several factors that negatively affected local communities. Although credible COVID-19 information had been translated into many languages and was widely available, that information was not reaching immigrant communities.…”
