Partners in crime: neutrophils and monocytes/macrophages in inflammation and disease

Abstract: Neutrophils are becoming recognized as highly versatile and sophisticated cells that display de novo synthetic capacity and potentially prolonged lifespan. Emerging concepts such as neutrophil heterogeneity and plasticity have revealed that, under pathological conditions, neutrophils may differentiate into discrete subsets defined by distinct phenotypic and functional characteristics. Indeed, these newly described neutrophil subsets will undoubtedly add to the already complex interactions between neutrophils a… Show more

“…Patrolling monocytes and tissue‐resident macrophages are part of the first line of defense upon viral infection. These specialized phagocytic cells play the role of first responders against a wide range of pathogens and, upon activation, release immune modulators such as TNFα, IL‐1β, and IL‐6 which trigger localized inflammation . Macrophages and monocytes are one of the first immune subsets identified in the synovial tissue cellular infiltrate of CHIKV‐infected patients .…”

“…Specifically, reviews will provide insight regarding our understanding of how neutrophils interact with, and modulate the behavior of monocytes and macrophages within health and disease (Kumar et al 2018). These interactions have proven to be centrally important with respect to the development of an inflammatory vs. a reparative tissue environment.…”

“…Both methods of macrophage depletion corroborate to show striking increases in neutrophil recruitment to the liver after brain-LPS microinjection. These results suggest that neutrophils may compensate for macrophage loss, or that they are normally constrained by macrophages in part possibly by being phagocytosed as they become impaired or die, as has been described in an immune response [65]. However, these infiltrating neutrophils do not appear to fully make up for macrophage functions as they do not exhibit the same dynamic movements or lasting occupation in the liver during the hepatic response to brain-LPS (Fig.…”
