Partnering with patients – a concept ready for action

Abstract: Partnerships between healthcare providers and patients develop over time. They are created to support patients in having a greater voice in their care and to empower them in self-management. A descriptive model of partnership is proposed to support researchers in generating or applying existing theory to the development of research designs and tools that could test how this process actually works.

“…Whilst interpreting the data, using a comparative analysis of the codes, the elements that make up the theoretical model began to take shape. Incorporated within the model are aspects from other health care partnership models and significant findings from related research which resonated with the themes emerging from this study (Fleming, 1998;Freeman et al, 2004;Bidmead et al, 2005;Hook, 2006;Pairman et al, 2006;Wiggins, 2008). These themes have been organised into a model based on the antecedents, attributes and consequences which define a conceptual framework (Rodgers, 1989) and describe significant features of a partnership relationship.…”

“…The notion of partnership has been critiqued by a number of authors, using a concept analysis to clarify the use of the term in health and social care literature and to provide a reliable definition (Gallant, et al, 2002;Bidmead et al, 2005;Hook, 2006;Wiggins, 2008). Systematic literature reviews were undertaken using a range of health and social care databases covering a period from 1982(Wiggins, 2008.…”
