Partitioning and transmutation strategy R&D for nuclear spent fuel: the SACSESS and GENIORS projects

Abstract: Processes such as PUREX allow the recovery and reuse of the uranium and the plutonium of GEN II/GEN III reactors and are being adapted for the recycling of the uranium and the plutonium of GEN IV MOX fuels. However, it does not fix the sensitive issue of the long-term management of the high active nuclear waste (HAW). Indeed, only the recovery and the transmutation of the minor actinides can reduce this burden down to a few hundreds of years. In this context, and in the continuity of the FP7 EURATOM SACSESS pr… Show more

“…When discussing about nuclear waste, the P&T community delivers the reduction of radiotoxicity over time normalized to one ton see e. g. [35,36] with the caveat that radiotoxicity is a weighted unit overemphasizes the effect of heavy isotopes due to a higher toxicity index. An approach often criticized in the final disposal community [37].…”

“…Safety of advanced nuclear systems and fuel cycles [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] is supported through R&D towards a new generation of more sustainable reactor technologies. Safety design and licensing of technologies are also identified as a high priority by the European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan SET-Plan (SNETP-ESNII Generation IV fast reactors and closing the fuel cycle).…”

“…The partitioning and transmutation (P&T) strategy has been proposed as an effective way to curb the nuclear waste problem, as it can reduce the volume and mandatory storage time for spent fuel significantly. Lanthanides (Ln), due to their large proportion relative to the actinides (An) and high neutron-absorption cross sections that would adversely affect the transmutation, are required to be removed from An before the transmutation process . However, the similarity between the trivalent actinides (An(III)) and lanthanides (Ln(III)) in chemical properties makes the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) a very challenging task .…”
