There has been an on-going pursuit for relations between the levels of chemicals in plants/crops and the source levels in soil or water in order to address impacts of toxic substances on human health and ecological quality. In this research, we applied the quasi-equilibrium partition model to analyze the relations for nonionic organic contaminants between plant/crop roots and external soil/water media. The model relates the in-situ root concentration factors of chemicals from external water into plant/crop roots (RCF(water)) with the system physicochemical parameters and the chemical quasi-equilibrium states with plant/crop roots (αpt, ≤1). With known RCF(water) values, root lipid contents (flip), and octanol-water Kow’s, the chemical-plant αpt values and their ranges of variation at given flipKow could be calculated. Because of the inherent relation between αpt and flipKow, a highly distinct correlation emerges between log RCF(water) and log flipKow (R2 = 0.825; n = 368), with the supporting data drawn from 19 disparate soil-plant studies covering some 6 orders of magnitude in flipKow and 4 orders of magnitude in RCF(water). This correlation performs far better than any relationship previously developed for predicting the contamination levels of pesticides and toxic organic chemicals in plant/crop roots for assessing risks on food safety.

In this work, the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), rye (Secale cereale L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), and pea (Pisum sativum L.) to bromides of potassium (KBr) and ammonium (NH4Br) was studied. All plants were capable of accumulating high concentrations of bromine (Br). However, the Br accumulation depended on the Br compounds presented in the growth medium and plant species. The highest Br concentrations were observed in leaves and roots of the seedlings germinated in the medium spiked with KBr. Oat accumulated more Br than other plants and the lowest Br accumulation was observed in pea. The bioaccumulation of Br resulted in suppression of plant biomass and concentrations of several essential nutrients (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn and Cl). The most negative effects were caused by NH4Br. Probably, this action was due to cumulative effects of Brand NH4 + . Among other plant species, the most tolerant to bromides was oat and the most sensitive was wheat.

Few studies have considered the effect of cooccurring heavy metals on plant accumulation of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs), and less is known about the role of intermolecular interactions. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms of Cu/Zn effects on hydroponic uptake of four deuterated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs-d 10 ) by spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Both solubility enhancement experiment and quantum mechanical calculations demonstrated the existence of [PAH-Cu(H 2 O) 0−4 ] 2+ and [2•PAH-Cu-(H 2 O) 0−2 ] 2+ via cation−π interactions when Cu 2+ concentration was ≤100 μmol/L. Notably, PAH-d 10 concentrations in both roots and shoots increased significantly with Cu 2+ concentration. This was because the formation of phytoavailable PAH-Cu 2+ complexes decreased PAH-d 10 hydrophobicity and consequently decreased their sorption onto dissolved organic carbon (DOC, i.e., root exudates), thereby increasing phytoavailable concentrations and uptake of PAHs-d 10 . X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis showed that PAH-Cu 2+ complexes could enter defective spinach roots via apoplastic pathway. However, Zn 2+ and PAHs-d 10 cannot form the cation−π interactions because of the high desolvation penalty of Zn 2+ . Actually, Zn 2+ decreased the spinach uptake of PAHs-d 10 due to the increase of DOC induced by Zn. This work provides molecular insights into how metals could selectively affect the plant uptake of HOCs and highlights the importance of considering the HOC phytoavailability with coexisting metals.
