Four major applications in nonferrous metal smelting have been identified, where the limestone process can be used to desulfurize weak SO2 smelter gases. These are: 1. Fugitive gases; 2. Copper reverb gases; 3. Lead sintering gases; and 4. Moly plant tail gases. Typical gas volumes and SO2 concentrations for these applications are given in Table I.
Reverb GasesThese are copper reverberatory furnace discharge gases. After leaving the furnace, they are cooled in waste heat boilers or gas coolers before being passed through electrostatic precipitators. From there, the gases flow through ducts to the reverb gas discharge stack. The FGD system would be installed between the ESP and the stack.
