Particularities of optical pumping effects in cold and ultra-slow beams of Na and Cs in the case of cyclic transitions

Abstract: The time-dependent population dynamics of hyperfine (HF) levels of n2p3/2 states is examined for cyclic transitions in alkali atoms. We study a slow and cold atomic beam of Na (n = 3) and Cs (n = 6), taking into account the long interaction time of light with atoms (~200 μs) inside the resonant laser beam. Simple analytical expressions for the populations of the excited states and for the intensities of the absorption lines are derived for a three-level system model. We show that at moderate pump laser power t… Show more

“…However, instead of analyzing fluorescence signals sometimes it can be more preferable to study the photocurrent signals caused by the processes of excited states photoionization. The possibility of close to 100percent efficiency of photoelectrons recording ensures stronger response signals generated under photoionization of polarized atoms [3], thus it opens up an opportunity of observing very fine physical effects caused by alignment or/and orienting [3,4] of gaseous media due to, for example, optical pumping [5]. In this study the " pump-probe" method is used to investigate the 5p 5 ( 2 P 3/2 )6p[3/2] 2 (79212.5 cm −1 ) state of Xe isotopes in a supersonic beam.…”

“…This population can be found via asymptotic solution of the Schrödinger equation (2) upon adiabatic switching (3) of the P -field Rabi frequency. At t = 0 the entire population is in state g. The chosen amplitude 0 = 0.1 MHz is too small to cause any notable depletion of state g due to optical pumping [23][24][25]. The relaxation rates α = 1/τ α for the upper and intermediate levels are calculated using the values τ f = 52.4 ns and τ i = 16.3 ns that correspond to the radiative lifetimes of the 4d 5/2 and 3p 3/2 states of Na, respectively [26,27].…”
