Particle swarm optimization of nanoantenna-based infrared detectors

Abstract: The multi-resonant response of three-steps tapered dipole nano-antennas, coupled to a resistive and fast micro-bolometer, is investigated for the efficient sensing in the infrared band. The proposed devices are designed to operate at 10.6 m, regime where the complex refractive index of metals becomes important, in contrast to the visible counterpart, and where a full parametric analysis is performed. By using a particle swarm algorithm (PSO) the geometry was adjusted to match the impedance between the nanoante… Show more

“…[53,55] The resonance wavelength (λ res ) of a nano-antenna is mainly determined by its dimensions. In this method, PSOA [38] is used to find the best values of nano-antenna dimension, which provides the highest efficiency and the required amount for the input impedance. This manner is performed by combining the PSOA with the FEM, in which the PSOA updates the nano-antenna dimension values and the fitness function evaluation with FE.…”

“…Currently, traditional optimization methods, such as gradient descent (GD) [19][20] and heuristic methods [21][22][23][24], are employed in resist model calibration. The former relies on the gradient information of the loss function to update the parameters, which is widely used due to its stable convergence and clear underlying principles.…”

“…The dimensions of the resonant antennas are proportional to the operating wavelength in the microwave, IR, or optical regimes 45 , 46 . Many nano-antennas structures were proposed in literature to operate around 10 μm including nano-dipoles 47 , bowties 16 , 17 , spiral 48 , nano-crescent 49 , tapered dipole 50 , and log-periodic 51 . These designs resulted in an antenna resistance in the range of a few tens of Ohms 51 .…”
