Traditional cellulose filter media used for air filtration in vehicle engines are characterized by 99.9% filtration efficiency and accuracy above 2–5 µm. The highest engine component wear is caused by dust grains above 1 µm. Filter media with nanofiber additions provide greater filtration efficiency of dust grains below 5 µm. Filter material selection for vehicle engine air filter is a problem because their manufacturers mainly provide only the structure parameters: pore size, air permeability, and thickness. There is no information about material filtration properties using polydisperse test dust. The manuscript presents methodology and experimental test results of five samples A, B, C, D and E, filter materials differing in their chemical composition and structure parameters. In the first stage, efficiency characteristics φw, filtration accuracy dzmax and the flow resistance Δpw depending on the dust absorption coefficient km of three filter cartridges of each material, A, B, C, D and E, were determined. Then, from each material characteristics of one piece was selected in order to compare their initial and initial period efficiencies as well as changes in the flow resistance depending on the dust absorption coefficient km. Obtained results showed that the filter materials differ significantly in efficiency and accuracy values in the initial filtration period. Initial period duration is also different, i.e., filtration efficiency increasing time to a certain value, which for materials with a nanofiber layer is much shorter, which minimizes engine component wear. For materials with nanofibers, flow resistance increase intensity is greater, which results from surface filtration. Filtration efficiency of each filter material sample A, B, C, D and E was assessed with the filtration quality coefficient including the efficiency and flow resistance. In the available literature, the problem of increasing filtration efficiency in the initial period is known, but there are no results for specific filter materials. Research shows that filter material characteristics are closely related. Each increase in efficiency and accuracy of intake air filtration reduces engine components wear, but it is related to flow resistance increase in the engine intake system, which reduces its power, and increases need for more frequent filter servicing.

Particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of 0.3 µm is inhalable and brings great threats to human health. Traditional meltblown nonwovens used for air filtration need to be treated by high voltage corona charging, which has the problem of electrostatic dissipation and thus reduces the filtration efficiency. In this work, a kind of composite air-filter with high efficiency and low resistance was fabricated by alternating lamination of ultrathin electronspun nano-layer and melt-blown layer without corona charging treatment. The effects of fiber diameter, pore size, porosity, layer number, and weight on filtration performance were investigated. Meanwhile, the surface hydrophobicity, loading capacity, and storage stability of the composite filter were studied. The results indicate that the filters (18.5 gsm) laminated by 10 layers fiber-webs present excellent filtration efficiency (97.94%), low pressure drop (53.2 Pa), high quality factor (QF 0.073 Pa−1), and high dust holding capacity (9.72 g/m2) for NaCl aerosol particles. Increasing the layers and reducing individual layer weight can significantly improve filtration efficiency and reduce pressure drop of the filter. The filtration efficiency decayed slightly from 97.94% to 96.48% after 80 days storage. The alternate arrangement of ultra-thin nano and melt-blown layers constructed a layer-by-layer interception and collaborative filtering effect in the composite filter, realizing the high filtration efficiency and low resistance without high voltage corona charging. These results provided new insights for the application of nonwoven fabrics in air filtration.

Experimental evaluation of the properties of filter materials in the selection of material for filtration of inlet air of internal combustion engines was carried out. The filtration characteristics were determined: filtration efficiency and accuracy, as well as flow resistance depending on the dust mass load. Filter materials based on cellulose, polyester, microfiber glass, and cotton and polyester nonwoven beds were studied. Two filter beds consisting of three base filter materials were designed: composite K1 (polyester-microglass-cellulose) and composite K2 (cellulose-microglass-cellulose), and their characteristics were performed. The air filtration quality factor was used to analyze the test results. The coefficient of filtration efficiency was defined, showing the effect of the preliminary stage on the total time of the filtration process. It was shown that the K1 composite has high (dpmax = 1.5÷3 µm) filtration accuracy, high initial filtration efficiency (99.8%), which shortens the pre-stage, and extends to 96-98% the duration of the main stage of the filtration process. The K1 composite obtained more than twice the mass loading of dust (kdK1 = 148,9 g/m2), which will allow the vehicle's mileage to be extended.
