Participatory infrastructuring of community energy

Abstract: Thanks to renewable energies the decentralized energy system model is becoming more relevant in the production and distribution of energy. The scenario is important in order to achieve a successful energy transition. This paper presents a reflection on the ongoing experience of infrastructuring a sociotechnical system in which local communities can manage renewable energies as a Common Pool Resources. We explore how to create a space for citizens' participation in a continuous process of design for energy mana… Show more

“…Marttila et al [54] supported the existence of similarities between the PD approach and commons, such as a democratic political agenda and the effort to build upon communities' capabilities for self-determination. Among the eight papers on commons-related case studies, six [21,47,51,[85][86][87] referred to ICT tool supporting commoning practices while two focused on urban commons [63,78]. Among the papers focusing on ICT tools, one paper [47] focuses on the infrastructural level of long-lasting community network building; one [85] initiates a process with a specific group; two [51,87] provide insights on the institutional constraints to participation and commoning; and three [21,86,87] discusses design processes in relation to concrete objectives.…”

“…Free Software, see, for instance, [8]) or be commons through design when the digital tools support a shared management of a resource (such as locally produced electricity, e.g. [16]). Digital commons have been successfully used in process to support specific communities such as political and cultural activists [48], low-income populations [49].…”

“…Genossenschaft in DE and AT) in others just the concept of cooperations is used [4]. In [20] Capaccioli et al design two cooperations in Italy and conclude that the cooperation values that come with this concept are a big part why people participate. Their results also show that cooperations lead to better relationships between actors involved in their energy system.…”
