ZusammenfassungZiel der Literaturstudie war es herauszufinden, welche wissenschaftlichen Projekte zu partizipativer Technikentwicklung in der Erziehungshilfe und jugendbezogener Behindertenhilfe bereits durchgeführt wurden und wie im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs der Sozialen Arbeit die Thematik partizipativer Technologieentwicklung in Einrichtungen der Jugend- und Behindertenhilfe behandelt wird. Ziel ist auch, die angewendete systematische Recherchestrategie zu beschreiben. Methodisch folgt der systematische Literaturreview einem definierten Korpus der relevanten, überwiegend deutschsprachigen wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften Sozialer Arbeit zwischen 1994 und Mai 2020. Durchsucht wurden jene Fachzeitschriften, die sich mit Themengebieten angrenzend zur Forschungsfrage befassen: die Thematik der Jugend(hilfe), Medien, Technologie oder Digitalisierung. Der systematische Literaturreview benennt beforschte Felder und Themen. Die Ergebnisdarstellung erfolgt dabei kategorienbasiert entlang den Forschungslinien Partizipative Forschung, Assistenztechnologien, Handlungsanweisungen für Medienkompetenz von Jugendlichen und Digitalisierung in der Sozialen Arbeit. Der Beitrag zeigt Desiderata für zukünftige Forschung zu partizipativer Technikentwicklung in der Sozialen Arbeit auf.

The Perspectives of Clinicians on Enriching Patient Experiences in a Clinical Context: A Qualitative Study

Understanding the viewpoint of clinicians in a healthcare setting is a vital task to comprehend the success of patients undergoing physical rehabilitation. Addressing user experience is an essential activity which designers undertake when formulating product specifications at the early stages of product design. The involvement of clinicians during the product use-phase influences the progress and achievements attained by the patients throughout their rehabilitation journey. Several clinicians (n=16) were asked to participate in a qualitative study to evaluate the performance of different personae in activities of daily living. The experiences of patients who use rehabilitation products as part of their therapy session at the clinic were evaluated. Based on this evaluation, a set of clinician requirements were formulated to reflect the overall experience when using rehabilitation products. Understanding these requirements brought about several implications to be considered during the design cycle. Through these considerations and by adopting a user-centred design approach, designers are in a better position to design innovative products targeted at providing a high-quality user experience which increases customer satisfaction.

User involvement is widely recognized as best practice in the development of information technology (IT) systems. In large-scale IT projects, the involvement of users and other stakeholder groups is typically in the form of representatives, as opposed to the direct (in-person) participation characteristic for smaller projects. The potential new sharing of power that representative participation entails vis-à-vis direct stakeholder involvement, and the implications of such a shift, are an important discussion in the context of participatory design. This paper extends and adds to previous work on this subject. Drawing on stakeholder interviews conducted as part of a case study of an electronic health record implementation project in Norway, this paper seeks to describe and analyze problems that can arise with representative participation in a large-scale project. Our focus is on an observed decline of interaction between health professionals participating actively in the project and their advisory units consisting of colleagues without a formal project role. The paper describes how the project’s structural arrangements might explain this decline. The paper also describes how the participating health professionals’ involvement of the advisory units at regular intervals early in the project (broad involvement) was replaced by more ad hoc and competence-oriented approaches (narrow involvement). We further use the organizational structure of democracies as the basis for two analogies, (I) participants-as-political-representatives and (II) participants-as-technocrats. The observed decline in interaction between the participating health professionals and their advisory units can be seen as a transition in role from user representative to technocrat. Generalizing from the case, we suggest that (1) a project’s structure strongly affects the possibilities of participating users to consult other users (e.g., non-participating colleagues) about issues concerning the design solution, (2) a project’s structure conditions the role of participating users and who, or what, they represent, and (3) representative participation requires rethinking a project’s structure.
