“…Besides parents, teachers and friends, siblings may have an important role in providing support. For adolescents with neurodevelopmental impairment, factors in the microsystem, for example siblings' support and communication in the family, are of great importance to participation in domestic life and peer relationships (Lygnegård 2018). In disability research, adult siblings of people with intellectual disability are highlighted as an increasingly critical service group that merits more attention (Hodapp et al 2017).…”

“…Restrictions on participation among adolescents with life-long developmental disabilities, for example ID, have been found in everyday life. Some restrictions faced by them are affected by environmental factors that are similar to those for adolescents without disabilities, for example peer-relations, however in school the effect of disabilities are especially evident (Anaby et al, 2014;Lygnegård, 2018). A recent report shows that adults with ID do not perceive themselves as having equal rights in society and state that expectations of others on themselves as citizens with ID to be active members of society are low (Swedish Agency for Participation, 2020).…”

“…Research has been conducted on the participation of children and young people in various aspects of life (Lygnegård, Almqvist, Granlund, & Huus, 2018;Lygnegård, Augustine, Granlund, Kåreholt, & Huus, 2018) using the Children and Youth version of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (Lygnegård, 2018), demonstrating that this classification can be a useful tool in documenting young people's mental health in everyday life activities (SDG 3). Moreover, an interdisciplinary approach is crucial in designing interventions to increase participation in and outside school activities (SDGs 4 and 10), and, related to SDG 3, it is not a diagnosis per se that primarily affects participation but rather factors such as sibling support and family atmosphere.…”
