Participation of the Green Algae Ulvaria obscura in Bioremediation of Sea Water from Oil Products

Abstract: Participation of green algae in bioremediation of sea water from oil products (OPs) has been studied. Decrease in the content of OPs in water is accompanied by their accumulation by the alga Ulvaria obscura (Chlorophyta). It has been assumed that neutralization of OPs in Ulvaria occurs, similarly to Fucus vesiculosus (Phaeophyta), all over the thallome: destruction of OPs starts on the alga surface by epiphytic hydrocarbonoxidizing bacteria providing absorption and subsequent degradation of OPs by plant cells.… Show more

“…An increase in the concentration of hydrogen peroxide stimulates catalase production, which was observed in our experiment upon exposure to DF at concentration up to 100 MPC. In Palmaria palmata , catalase activity increased at petroleum product concentrations of 60 MPC ( Voskoboinikov et al., 2018 ). Higher concentrations of DF caused inhibition of enzyme activity that may be associated with an excess of peroxide formed.…”

“…This is also evidenced by the results of our study, during which, in 10 days, a decrease in the concentration of petroleum by 7–16% was recorded in the water without algae. Mainly, physico-chemical degradation occurs as a decrease in the length of the alkyl chain ( Voskoboinikov et al., 2018 , Voskoboinikov et al., 2020 ). These become the light fractions that are the most toxic to plants, as they penetrate through cell walls and plasma membranes more easily ( Patin, 2008 ).…”

“…Over the years, oily wastewater from oil spills, oily domestic sewage, and industrial chemical leakages has become a global threat to our living environment and ecosystems. Therefore, the efficient treatment of oily wastewater has become an urgent global challenge. To address this issue, considerable efforts have been made to develop several advanced technologies and materials for oily wastewater remediation, such as chemical method, physical method (absorbent materials , and skimming), bioremediation, , and in situ burning . Among these alternatives, the absorption method based on three-dimensional (3D) absorbent materials is considered the most attractive and effective approach because of its low cost, convenience, and efficiency.…”
