Participation of melatonin in regulation of blood oxygen-transport function in oxidative stress induced by injection of lipopolisaccharide

Abstract: The contribution of melatonin to the regulatoin of the blood oxygen transport function was studied during oxidative stress induced by a triple injection of lipopolysaccharide (at a dose of 5 mg/kg) in conditions of erythropoietin and gasetransmitters (nitrogen monoxide, hydrogen sulfide) action. In the experimental groups, intraperitoneal injections of melatonin (5 mg/kg), erythropoietin (1000 U/kg), hydrogen sulfide donor (NaHS 5 mg/kg), and L-arginine (100 mg/kg), were performed. The use of melatonin alone o… Show more

“…Hence, given the available evidence and our findings, melatonin could be a useful supplement for both the healthy population and COVID‐19 patients. Moreover, significant improvement of blood oxygen saturation in the melatonin group compared to the controls could be due to melatonin's influence on oxygen delivery and its utilization in tissues as one of the functions of melatonin, which studied experimentally and clinically 54–57 . Decrease vascular permeability, therefore decreased pulmonary infiltration could be another explanation, albeit the present study did not evaluate pulmonary infiltration resolution during the hospitalization period between the two groups, which could be evaluated in further studies.…”

[54][55][56][57] Decrease vascular permeability, therefore decreased pulmonary infiltration could be another explanation, albeit the present study did not evaluate pulmonary infiltration resolution during the hospitalization period between the two groups, which could be evaluated in further studies. Hence, it seems that it would be prudent to invest in more extensive clinical trials to find more about the melatonin associations with COVID-19 outcomes.…”

“…Based on the available evidence and our findings, melatonin can be a useful supplement for COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, a considerable increase in blood oxygen saturation in the melatonin group compared to the placebo group might be related to the influence of melatonin on oxygen transport and usage in tissues, which has been examined experimentally and clinically [33][34][35][36].…”

“…Также установлено, что H 2 S замедляет старение эндотелиальных клеток за счёт ослабления окислительного стресса [20]. Газотрансмиттеры H 2 S и NO могут оказывать влияние на активность свободнорадикальных процессов и, в целом, на антиоксидантный потенциал организма, влияя на адаптивные механизмы, обеспечивающие снижение проявлений окислительного стресса [21].…”
