The relationship between the explosion inerting effectiveness of rock dusts on coal dusts, as a function of the specific surface area (cm2/g) of each component is examined through the use of 20-L explosion chamber testing. More specifically, a linear relationship is demonstrated for the rock dust to coal dust (or incombustible to combustible) content of such inerted mixtures with the specific surface area of the coal and the inverse of that area of the rock dust. Hence, the inerting effectiveness, defined as above, is more generally linearly dependent on the ratio of the two surface areas. The focus on specific surface areas, particularly of the rock dust, provide supporting data for minimum surface area requirements in addition to the 70% less than 200 mesh requirement specified in 30 CFR 75.2.

Abstract. Coal has been one of the major energy sources in the world. Many industries use coal as a main fuel. A coal dust explosion is one of the main hazards of coal utilization because of its massive damage. Coal dust explosion hazards involve the combustible fine dusts or other small particles that present a fire or deflagration hazard when suspended at a sufficient concentration in air or some other oxidizing medium. When such materials are contained in an enclosure, they present an explosion hazard. To eliminate the possibility of dust explosions by ensuring that the dust concentration does not exceed the minimum explosibility concentration (MEC) or the amount of dust per unit volume of air below which the dust cloud cannot propagate flame. Therefore, the objective of this work is to measure the MEC for coal dust explosion with the various conditions of coal storage such as the particle size, moisture of coal, degree of dispersion and delayed time of ignition source to prevent the coal dust explosion which aims to study and design the explosion safety measures for coal dust handing installations. The results show that smaller size of particle, low moisture in coal and high coal dust dispersion can increase the chance or risk of dust explosion. Also, the shorter time of dust dispersion exposes to ignition source can enhance the possibility of explosion in coal storage.

The influence of particle size on the flammability and explosion severity has been widely demonstrated for coals along the years: the thinner the particle size, the more flammable is the dust and more severe are the explosions. Later, the increase on the use of biomass led to using the same resources and techniques for both groups of materials, considering them similar enough. However, there are basic differences between biomass and coal dust particles that leads to different behaviours when focusing on industrial fire safety. This difference is the starting point of this review, where a study on the existing knowledge in relation to the size and shape of biomass dust is presented. The methodologies and parameters used to determine particle size are described and discussed, showing the inconvenience of using only one parameter (d50) to describe dust, as well as the need of a standardized methodology to homogenise the results. The biomass data gathered from scientific literature and the following analysis carried out has also highlighted the importance of identifying samples in an accurate way and the strong necessity of further research on these materials and on the interdependence between particle size and the experimental procedures for flammability and explosibility properties.
