Participation in Cervical Cancer Screening by Age and Region – A Cohort Study with a 3 1/2 year Follow-up on 2 223 135 Women in Bavaria

Abstract: Poor participation rates in general are unlikely to account for the high cervical cancer rates in Germany. Low participation rates in elderly women, particularly those in rural regions might contribute to the well-known peak of cervical cancer in elderly women.

“…7,11 Age-dependency of participation has also been observed in the German cervical cancer screening program. 12 As known from other screening interventions, participation rates are low in socially deprived persons or persons with low education. [11][12][13] Unfortunately, we were unable to assess educational or social status in SCREEN.…”

[11][12][13] Unfortunately, we were unable to assess educational or social status in SCREEN. Therefore, we cannot rule out the possibility that our sample is not representative of the social structure of Schleswig-Holstein.…”

“…Iftner et al recruited participants at office-based gynecologists when attending for routine cytological screening [13]. Since only about half of 20-29-year-old women participate in annual cervical cancer screening in Germany [15], this selection might have biased results. Furthermore, three studies used a hybrid capture (HC2) test for prescreening and a line probe assay that detects 24 HPV types [10,13,14].…”
