Participation Guarantee System: Promoting Thai Rice using International Geographical Indication and Organic Agriculture Standard Certification

Abstract: Sangyod rice has a high export potential because it is a high nutrient, Geographical Indication (GI) rice, and its cultivation is encouraged under the Organic Agriculture Thailand Standard. However, it can still not maximize export value due to limitations in developing international organic farming standards. This study extended the participatory guarantee systems (PGS) criteria under GI and the National Organic Program (NOP)–the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) organic standard by investigatin… Show more

“…Sangyod Muang Phatthalung (SMP) rice is a traditional rice variety grown in the lowland paddy fields of southern ailand, especially in Nakhon Si ammarat, Songkhla, and Phatthalung provinces, which are the main SMP rice producing areas. e SMP grain yield is relatively very low because this native species with an average yield of 64-2,500 kg ha −1 relies on the area and the type of standard (Petruang & Napasintuwong, 2022;Tongkaemkaew et al, 2022). Although SMP rice has been among the top five rice types popular in Southeast Asia (Tasteatlas, 2021), being a brown rice with high levels of iron, vitamin B, niacin, and anthocyanin antioxidants (Banchuen et al, 2009), with an increasingly popular demand, the SMP rice production still encounters problems associated with climate change, decrease in paddy fields, and overuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides (Duong et al, 2023;Irawan & Antriyandart, 2021;Pame et al, 2023;Phitthayaphinant & Tongkaemkaew, 2018;Taratima et al, 2023).…”
