Participants’ views of the use of video in lesson study in higher education in Spain: An exploratory multiple case study

Abstract: Lesson study (LS) is a process through which teachers design, teach and discuss a lesson collaborating with colleagues. Sometimes, it includes video recording the lesson so teachers can use videos to later discuss the lesson and its improvement, however, there is little research addressing the consequences of doing it. This article investigates participants' perceptions and use of video within LS. Resultsshow that participants perceived video in LS as viable and with potential to stimulate reflection and to im… Show more

“…In other studies, video creation helped students improve cross-curricular competencies (Orús et al, 2016). In some cases, creating videos had a positive impact on academic development and improved student learning (Ruiz-Tovar et al, 2019;Moreno-Guerrero et al, 2020;Hervas et al, 2020).…”

“…Certainly, all reviews need to stop at a certain moment, and, in consequence, this might leave aside studies in the process of being published. To the knowledge of the author, at least a couple of studies are about to be published early in 2020 that, potentially, could have been included in this review: Appelgate et al (2020) and Hervas et al (2020). As for the initial year, 1997 was set because, even if according to a great number of previous literature (e.g., Bjuland & Mosvold, 2015; Fujii, 2016; Lewis, 2009; Shimizu & Chino, 2015; Takahashi & McDougal, 2016), the international popularization of LS took place after the studies of Stigler and Hiebert (1999) and Yoshida (1999), we find earlier literature around that date (e.g., Lewis & Tsuchida, 1997).…”

“…The notion of lesson study, originated from Japan, is a systematic approach of seeking the best practices for a lesson/course/curriculum through cycles of research lessons that are jointly planned, taught, observed and reflected by a group of teachers (e.g. Lewis et al , 2009; Dudley, 2011; Lewis and Takahashi, 2013; Hervas et al , 2020). As for the given study, the three instructors participated in this iterative process throughout the semester to coordinate, review and share insights among themselves in order to enhance their own online section as it progressed.…”
