“…In the Mixteca region, the intensification of deforestation, overgrazing, and cropping activities during the Spanish colonization contributed to locally severe soil erosion. Soil losses negatively affect other ESs such as food production (Contreras-Hinojosa et al, 2003 and water quality and availability due to sediment deposition (Bautista-Sánchez et al, 2013).
