Partially treated domestic wastewater as a nutrient source for tomatoes (Lycopersicum solanum) grown in a hydroponic system: effect on nutrient absorption and yield

Abstract: Using effluent from the anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) of the decentralised wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) as a sole nutrient source is not sufficient for tomato plants grown in hydroponic system. The study investigated the effects of commercial hydroponic fertilizer mix (CHFM) combined with ABR effluent on tomato growth and yield. A media-based hydroponic technique consisting of three treatments, namely, ABR effluent, CHFM, and ABR effluent combined with CHFM (ABR + CHFM (50:50 v/v) was used. The resul… Show more

“…The average number of fruits/plants, average weight/fruit per bed, total yield/plants per bed, and qualitative attributes like fruit shape, size of the fruit, and dry mass of the tomato fruit yield were also recorded. This was performed with a similar method followed by Magwaza et al 43 To determine the chlorophyll pigment contents, the previous extraction method of Hernańdez-Hernańdez et al 44 was used with slight modifications. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energydispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) (SEM−EDX) measurements were carried out using a Quanta 200 FEI instrument equipped with a Quantax EDX detector to study the morphology of leaf surfaces and elemental distribution in the harvested matured tomato leaves according to the previous method of Xiong et al 45 4.3.3.…”

“…Most studies approach the use of treated urban wastewater, but other alternatives are also considered as reuse rainfall, drainage from greenhouses and aquaponic water, with positive results in yield and quality but fewer details about pathogenic or compound accumulation in fruit [30,[133][134][135] which consists of vital information for assessing the viability of the use of these resources. As an example, in Portugal, the reuse of NS in greenhouses has been used for some producers and for some time now, but there was no evidence in literature about this practice in the country until 2018 with the announcement of TomatInov Project and the consecutive divulgation and demonstration actions [136] where the NS is reused in a semi-closed system and the demonstration, in 2020, of full closed system by New Growing Systems [137], which reveals that although many technologies are in use, there is a lot of room for improvement.…”

“…Penelitiannya menghasilkan akurasi yang cukup tinggi yaitu mencapai 86,2% dalam mendeteksi benih selada yang akan dibudidayakan melalui hidroponik. [10] menyelidiki efek campuran pupuk hidroponik komersial (CHFM) dikombinasikan dengan limbah ABR pada tomat. Hasilnya pertumbuhan tomat dengan hidroponik lebih baik dengan cairan ABR.…”
