“…In a study of General and Local Anaesthesia among 130 patients undergoing thyroidectomies in a University Hospital in Bulgaria, the authors observed that the average duration of surgery under LA was 98 minutes, while the average duration of surgery under GA was 127 minutes [15]. Banasiewiecz T et al [18] reported an average operation time of 127 minutes, while Chintale SG et al [11] reported a duration of 50.5 minutes and also observed about 40% reduction in cost of surgery, when compared with the use of general anaesthesia. Our average operation time of 90 mins, could probably be attributed to the fact that most (43.4%) of our patients had lobectomy which was carried out under 60 mins.…”

“…Important considerations for using a local anesthesic technique are a cooperative patient, a surgeon accustomed with performing a thyroidectomy under these circumstances, and no allergy to local anesthetics. Contraindications include a known retroesophageal or retrotracheal goitre, concomitant cervical lymphadenectomy, and known or suspected locally invasive cancer [ 14 , 15 ]. Local anesthesia can be accomplished using a regional block of the cervical plexus combined with an anterior field block or an anterior field block alone.…”

“…Heute können regionale Blockaden mit der Allgemeinanästhesie als kombiniertes Verfahren eingesetzt werden. Dadurch wird die intraoperative Gabe von Opioiden signifikant reduziert, die postoperative Analgesie verbessert und der Gesamtkrankenhausaufenthalt verkürzt [6,8,65].…”
