Partial sequence conservation of SARS‐CoV‐2 NSP‐2, NSP‐12, and Spike in stool samples from Abadan, Iran

Abstract: Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, the clinical manifestations of the virus have undergone many changes. Recently, there have been many reports on gastrointestinal symptoms in COVID‐19 patients. This study is aimed to perform a detailed phylogenetic study and assessment of different SNVs in the RNA genome of viruses isolated from fecal samples of patients with COVID‐19 who have gastrointestinal symptoms, which can help better understand viral pathogenesis. In the present study… Show more

“…The glycoproteins of SARS‐CoV‐2, emerging from its surface, exhibit a specific affinity for the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts by binding to ACE2 and CD147 receptors. The enzyme TMPRSS2 in the cell facilitates the virus's entry, and the severity of symptoms increases with the involvement of more organs 9,10 . Due to its transmissibility, individuals must avoid being present in public.…”

“…Active viral replication has been confirmed in both the small and large intestines, as evidenced by electron microscopy, and viral genomes have been detected in stool samples. Enterocytes, rich in ACE-2 receptors and furin (a serine protease), facilitate virus entry, with TMPRSS2 and TMPRSS4 expression promoting this process [ 74 , 133 , 134 ]. ACE2-expressing cells are over tenfold more prevalent in the lower gastrointestinal tract (ileum, colon, and rectum) compared to the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, and duodenum).…”

“…SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA can be observed in stool samples of infected persons (Han et al, 2020; Xu et al, 2020; Zandi et al, 2023). When the virus enters the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), it is inactivated and then excreted in a non‐infectious state.…”
