Partial oxidation of allylic and primary alcohols with O2 by photoexcited TiO2

Abstract: Proper reaction conditions have been found for the conversion of geraniol, citronellol, trans-2-penten-1-ol and 1-pentanol to the corresponding aldehydes with good chemo-selectivity (>70%) by photochemical excitation of suspensions of P25-TiO(2). It is demonstrated that adsorption of the alcohol on the surface as an alcoholate is necessary for its oxidation. ESR-spin trapping experiments point out that oxidation of alcohols starts with the formation of alkoxide radicals. Water content in the dispersing medium … Show more

“…26 As a matter of fact, the two unresolved peaks are suggested to be parts of the quadruple DMPO−OH• adduct 27,28 (α N = α H β = 12.4 G) but overlapped and interfered by the stronger DMPOX signal. As soon as the onset of UVlight, a new six-line EPR signal (with asterisk) characteristic for the DMPO−•CN adduct 29 (α N = 14.5 G, α H β = 22.4 G) was generated; meanwhile, the intensities of DMPOX and OH• radicals were decayed to a certain extent (Figure 3a, blue line).…”

“…28,3741,47 Carbon-centred radical adducts afford a larger a H value than the a N value. 28,42 Thus, the type of radical species can be readily distinguished based on the hyperfine splitting pattern of the DMPO spin adducts.…”

“…Near-UV irradiated suspensions of P25-TiO 2 performed the partial oxidation of different alcohols (geraniol, citronellol, trans-2-penten-1-ol and 1-pentanol, dissolved in CH 3 CN-H 2 O mixture) with good selectivity (>70%) [15]. The selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde has been carried out in solvent-free system by using TiO 2 and Ir/TiO 2 photocatalysts [16] or in aqueous solution, under acidic conditions, through the TiO 2 /Cu(II)/solar UV photocatalytic system [17].…”
