The paper presents the results of the analysis on the variability of the ultra-high frequency (UHF) signals generated by partial discharges (PD) under the long-term AC voltage. Surface PD (SD) are generated by model PD source (PDS) immersed in brand new mineral oil. Three scenarios are compared and investigated, where different solid dielectrics are applied: pressboard paper (PBP), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and glass-ceramic (GLS). The PDS is powered continuously by the AC voltage with its relative level of 1.3 of the inception voltage (Ui) within 168 h. UHF signals generated by the continuously occurred SD within 168 h are registered. Various indicators describing the variability of the UHF signals emitted by SD are assigned and analyzed in order to discover if there are any relevant trends presented. Furthermore, some long-term characteristics of the UHF signals emitted by the applied PDS are also announced. As a result, some relevant trends are discovered and related to the properties of the applied dielectric materials, thus the variability of the UHF signals emitted by SD is confirmed. The highest variability of the UHF signals is associated with PBP and the first 48 h after PD inception. Moreover achieved results may be potentially applied for modeling of the PD variability in time, which may be useful for works that concern the development of the UHF method.

This paper investigates the effect of the voltage variations and the change of solid insulation material on the initiation and propagation of Electrical Tree (ET) through solid dielectrics based on the application of Finite Element Method (FEM) approach using the environmental domain of [COMSOL Multiphysics ] program as an innovative way to be used in the complicated study of Electrical Treeing Phenomenon (ETP). This research provides an innovative solution to suppress the initiation point of ET and suppress its growth rates using a composite solid insulation material of Poly-Vinyl Chloride (PVC) and Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) regardless to the mechanical features of this composition. In this research, the study cases are conducted for High Voltage (HV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV) power system networks as the effect of ETP is to be observed clearly. Abstract:The ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission system has advantages in delivering electrical energy over long distance at high capacity. UHVDC converter transformer is a key apparatus and its insulation state greatly affects the safe operation of the transmission system. Partial discharge (PD) characteristics of oil-pressboard insulation under combined AC-DC voltage are the foundation for analyzing the insulation state of UHVDC converter transformers. The defect pattern recognition based on PD characteristics is an important part of the state monitoring of converter transformers. In this paper, PD characteristics are investigated with the established experimental platform of three defect models (needle-plate, surface discharge and air gap) under 1:1 combined AC-DC voltage. The different PD behaviors of three defect models are discussed and explained through simulation of electric field strength distribution and discharge mechanism. For the recognition of defect types when multiple types of sources coexist, the Random Forests algorithm is used for recognition. In order to reduce the computational layer and the loss of information caused by the extraction of traditional features, the preprocessed single PD pulses and phase information are chosen to be the features for learning and test. Zero-padding method is discussed for normalizing the features. Based on the experimental data, Random Forests and Least Squares Support Vector Machine are compared in the performance of computing time, recognition accuracy and adaptability. It is proved that Random Forests is more suitable for big data analysis.
