In this paper, the surface discharge current pulses of PEEK (polyether-ether-ketone) under positive repetitive square voltage are measured. The effects of voltage rise time and fall time on pulse parameters of discharge current, instantaneous voltage of discharge and time-lag of discharge are analyzed in detail. The results show that the amplitude of discharge current and the instantaneous voltage of discharge decrease, and the time-lag of discharge and the dispersion of time-lag increase with the increase of voltage rise time. With the increase of voltage fall time, the amplitude of discharge current decreases and the instantaneous voltage of discharge, the time-lag of discharge and the dispersion of time-lag increase. To analyze the influence mechanism of voltage rise time and fall time on surface discharge, the accumulation of surface charge under repetitive square voltage is regarded as a periodic process. Besides, the correlation between forward discharge and back discharge in the process of discharge is analyzed, and the development of discharge is analyzed by using the time-lag theory. Furthermore, the relationship between instantaneous discharge voltage and voltage slew rate is revealed, and the surface charge accumulation processes under different voltage rise times and fall times are compared to reveal the influence mechanism of rise time and fall time on the surface discharge under positive repetitive square voltage.

The Inverter surge is a high-voltage phenomenon that is generated by the overlap returning waves by impedance mismatching among an inverter, cable and motor.The inverter has been available by advancement of control system of electrical instrument, such as the industrial motor.Insulation performance evaluation technology by partial discharge (PD) measurement is important because the mechanism leading to breakdown by the inverter surge is a cause of PD. In this study, a design methodology for the impulse generator for partial discharge test is developed. In addition, we measure repetitive PD inception voltage (RPDIV) at phase to phase, phase to ground and turn to turn in a motorette sample using automatic RPDIV measuring system and developed repetitive impulse voltage generator.As a result, it is found that generated voltage and current waveform varies depending on the motorette structure. It is also found that RPDIV of the motorette differs with and a without a varnish treatment. The repetitive impulse voltage is applied to confirm the insulation dignity of inverter-fed motor insulation.

Partial discharge (PD) activity of the inter-turn insulation of electric motor winding is investigated under different rise time of the square wave voltage, and the superposition effect of the polarized charges on PD activity is also analyzed for the specimen. Under different rise time of the square wave, tests of the PD activity (e.g., PD inception voltage (PDIV) and phase resolved PD (PRPD) pattern) and the thermal stimulated depolarization current are both performed. Comparing the results of the PRPD patterns at different rise time of the square wave, most of PD moves to the zero point of square wave voltage with the reduction in rise time. Also, PDIV decreases with the reduction in rise time. Through the analysis of a complete polarization process at the square wave voltage, the superposition effect of the polarized charges leads to the enhancement of electric field in the specimen when the polarity of square wave voltage rapidly reverses. With the reduction in rise time at square wave, more polarized charges can not follow changes of the applied voltage since the relaxation time of these dipoles is longer than the rise time of square wave, which leads to the enhancement of the electric field across a cavity. For this reason, they result in the reduction in PDIV and the movement of PRPD patterns to zero point of square wave voltage.
