Partial agenesis of dorsal pancreas. Report of two cases

Abstract: Highlights Agenesis of the dorsal pancreas is a rare congenital anomaly. The possibility of finding this disorder is increasing with the use of advanced radiological techniques. Some patients experience no symptoms. Rarely, they may also develop pancreatic exocrine insufficiency or pancreatic adenocarcinoma. This diagnosis could be missed by US, due to difficulty on visualization of body and tail of pancreas.

“…In our study, two (50%) patients had a partial and the other two (50%) had complete agenesis. The first case of dorsal agenesis was described in 1911 in an autopsy finding, and so far, around 100 cases have been reported in the world scientific literature till the year 2020 [16][17][18]. Pancreatitis is a commonly associated disease in patients with agenesis of the dorsal pancreas [18].…”

“…3 During the second month of development, the ventral pancreatic bud migrates dorsally, coming to lie posteroinferior to the dorsal bud and fusing with it. 4 The ventral bud forms the inferior head and uncinate process of the pancreas and the dorsal bud forms the superior part of the head, body, and tail. 5 Failure of the dorsal pancreatic bud to form the body and tail of the pancreas results in dorsal agenesis of the pancreas.…”
