Part I: Fighting Cancer with Deadly Bacteria

Abstract: A 200-year-old observation might provide a new way to eliminate tumors by infecting cancer patients with bacteria. Kristie Nybo explores a new approach that could transform cancer treatment.

“…He developed a "vaccine" ("Coley's toxins") composed of two killed bacterial species, Streptococcus pyogenes and Serratia marcescens, to simulate an infection with the accompanying fever without the risk of an actual infection [25][26][27]. As a result, prolonged or even complete regression of advanced malignancy was documented in some cases [1,23,28]. Moreover, mentioned above, T. Doyen tried to produce an anticancer "vaccine" from the "Micrococcus neoformans" he discovered [17].…”

“…In 1891, the physician Dr. William Coley was the first to use the bacteria and their toxins in the treatment of cases ending with cancer; he used live Streptococcus pyogenes and killed them by heating and injected them into his patients. After that, Dr. Coley was able to develop a safe vaccine composed of two of bacterial species after killing them that include Streptococcus pyogenes and Serratia marcescens; the vaccine was later called Coley's vaccine "Coley's toxin" which was widely used for different types of cancers such as carcinomas and lymphomas [10,142,143]. In initial tests, the bacterium Salmonella was injected into the solid tumor, where it was observed that the cancer cells were killed.…”

“…As well as cells B, cancer cells carrying the "best genes" are able to duplicate and expand easily than others. At the level of the organism, it is almost impossible that the immunological system reacts and fights against cancer cells because this is part of the same organism [4]. Therefore, it is remarkably hard to produce an immunological response.…”

“…Genes that are able to match antigens, duplicate easily and expand under a cellular cloning process. Indeed, a vaccine is any substance that stimulates the production of antibodies [4] and provides immunity against microbial infections. In fact, these cells have different genomes.…”
