Part H, Brachiopoda (Revised), vol. 4, ch. 2, p. 1027–1131

Abstract: Rostrate articulated brachiopods with biconvex shell that usually has dorsal fold and ventral sulcus; interareas typically low and limited to ventral valve. Shell commonly with coarse costae, sometimes fine; mostly impunctate. Ventral interior typically with dental plates; spondylium normally absent. Dorsal interior commonly with medium septum supporting septalium or hinge plates; outer parts of hinge plates form bases for crura that in recent genera are attached to spirolophous lophophore. Lower Ordovician (L… Show more

“…These data were taken from Brayard et al (2009) for the ammonoids and from McRoberts (2001) for the bivalves; the brachiopod data were compiled by the present author, on the basis of recently revised volumes of the "Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology", i.e. Savage et al (2002), Alvarez and Rong (2002), Carter and Johnson (2006) and Lee et al (2006). In most cases the local trends significantly deviate from the global ones.…”

“…The state of preservation of our material does not permit precision as regards the size of the foramen for each species, but adults of the identified genera are characterized by a reduced foramen (cf. data in Savage et al 2002). We are therefore inclined to regard the rhynchonellides as lying unattached on the sea floor.…”

“…They made their appearance during Pragian time (cf. Savage et al 2002; Savage, 2007), before disappearing at the end of the Devonian period (Mottequin, Brice & Legrand-Blain, 2014).…”

“…Up to now, the internal morphology of N. pygmaea is only known from two-dimensional serial sections. Savage et al (2002) pointed out the taxonomic importance of rhynchonellid muscle scars in comparison to other internal features, but stressed that they are commonly poorly known because of the limitations of clarity of the serial section. Furthermore, the problems of interpretation, reconstruction, and comparison of the internal shell morphology of different kinds of fossil preservation, e.g., silicified shells and internal moulds, are complicating the taxonomic study.…”
