Parsing profiles of temperamental reactivity and differential routes to delay of gratification: A person-based approach

Abstract: Informed by a developmental psychopathology perspective, the present study applied a person-based approach to examine whether associations between early sociocontextual experiences (e.g., socioeconomic factors and maternal discipline practices) and preschool-age children's delay of gratification vary across profiles of children's temperamental reactivity. In addition, the study examined the direct and mediating role of children's set shifting in associations with delay of gratification within each profile. The… Show more

“…Temperamental reactivity may confer risk for better or for worse through alterations in children’s development of self-regulation, a common mechanism underlying obesity-related behaviors (Hails et al, 2019). It may be that children with highly reactive temperaments need more support to manage stress and delay gratification (Suor et al, 2019). These children may also elicit more supportive caregiving available in households not strained by socioeconomic adversity.…”

“…Similar arguments have been advanced about pathways associated with the onset and development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and externalizing problems, 58 the development of poor emotion regulation, 59 and delay of gratification. 60 These authors [57][58][59][60] all emphasize that intervention or prevention strategies need to take account of the different pathways to the developmental outcome so that appropriate strategies are developed to address the unique needs and circumstances of each of the subgroups.…”

“…61 In relation to OW/OB, there has been a longstanding recognition of contributions from and interactions between genetic, environmental, and psychosocial factors. [84][85][86][87][88][89][90] Furthermore, there are examples of models in the literature on children's eating and weight that have included two or three of these sources of influence on development. 62,63,65,[91][92][93] However, there does not seem to have been a systematic and explicit focus on elements and the overtime processes inherent in a biopsychosocial approach.…”

“…There seem to be three common and divergent theoretical interpretations of DoG performance: (a) delay for the larger reward arises from increased sensitivity to the reward value of food, (b) choice for the immediate reward arises from greater impulsivity, and (c) delay for the larger reward is due to better top-down regulatory control [ 37 ]. Suor et al [ 122 ] have also argued that there is a lack of understanding of processes contributing to children’s delay abilities.…”
