Parsing Neurodynamic Information Streams to Estimate the Frequency, Magnitude and Duration of Team Uncertainty

Abstract: Neurodynamic organizations are information-based abstractions, expressed in bits, of the structure of long duration EEG amplitude levels. Neurodynamic information (NI, the variable of neurodynamic organization) is thought to continually accumulate as EEG amplitudes cycle through periods of persistent activation and deactivation in response to the activities and uncertainties of teamwork. Here we show that (1) Neurodynamic information levels were a better predictor of uncertainty and novice and expert behaviors… Show more

“…We suggest that it is the frequency, magnitude, and durations of the information organizations that are important for linking to macro behaviors, and not the EEG power levels per se. 37 These results may help explain how macro-scale team behaviors arise from the micro-scale neural dynamics of each team member. In this role they may serve as a coarse-grained intermediate representation that has causal significance in the communication between the firing of neurons and the semantic information in the environment.…”

“…Such sequence entrainment/synchrony in real-world settings was shown to occur with submarine navigation teams (Stevens and Galloway, 2014, 2019, 2021b. The submarine navigation team consists of one group responsible for keeping the ship on course and they do so by checking and reporting the position every 3 min through a timed sequence of activities called Rounds.…”
