Parotid Duct Foreign Body in a Dog Diagnosed with CT

Abstract: A 12 mo old castrated male German shorthaired pointer was referred with a 3 mo history of a recurrent left-sided facial swelling. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) combined with a positive contrast sialogram revealed the presence of a thick-walled dilated region of the left parotid duct and a normal appearance of the parotid gland. The affected parotid duct, complete with grass seed foreign body, was surgically removed under general anesthesia, and the parotid duct was ligated leaving the parotid glan… Show more

“…Alternatively, the duct can be ligated proximal to the defect, as described in the study by Goldsworthy et al . (), causing atrophy of the gland (Harrison & Garrett ). This technique produces consistent atrophy of the parotid gland in contrast to the effects on mandibular and sublingual glands and this may be related to the predominance of serous cells in the acini of the parotid gland (DeYoung et al .…”

“…Multiple surgical techniques have been described for the management of non-neoplastic inflammatory parotid disease (associated or not with lithiasis), such as parotidectomy (Trumpatori et al 2007, Guthrie & Hardie 2014, Proot et al 2016; opening of the duct for removal of the sialolith and primary closure or leaving it to heal by second intention (Tivers & Moore 2007); complete ligation of the duct (Harvey 1977, Goldsworthy et al 2013, Yoon et al 2017; resection of the affected part and anastomosis (Harvey 1977, Jeffreys et al 1996; primary repair of the affected duct in case of rupture (Harvey 1977, Jeffreys et al 1996 and marsupialization of the duct into the oral cavity (Ladlow & Gregory 2003).…”
