Parkinson’s disease in China: a forty-year growing track of bedside work

Abstract: The number and health burden of Parkinson’s disease increase rapidly in China. It is estimated that China will have nearly half of the Parkinson’s disease population in the world in 2030. In this review, we present an overview of epidemiology and health economics status of Parkinson’s disease across China and discuss the risk factors of Parkinson’s disease and related complications. From the view of clinical research, we also discuss the current status of clinical trials, diagnostic biomarkers, treatment of Pa… Show more

“…Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second common neurodegenerative disease. The average prevalence of PD in China was about 3.8756‰ (≥50 years) in Han population, bringing a huge burden to Chinese economics and healthcare system [1]. The clinical presentation and course of Parkinson's disease (PD) is heterogeneous, with variability in onset, progression, motor and non-motor symptoms.…”

“…Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It is estimated that by 2030, Chinese PD patients will increase to 4.94 million, accounting for a half of the PD patients worldwide (Li et al, 2019). Recent advances have helped delineate the pathogenetic mechanisms, yet the etiology and pathogenesis of PD in most individuals remain obscure.…”

“…Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder associated with the degeneration of dopamine-producing cells in the nigra [1]. Up to now, the average prevalence and incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) in China have been 1700/100,000 (≥65 years) and 797/100,000 (per year)respectively, also, the number of PD prevalence is expected to reach about 5 million by 2030 [2][3][4].The cardinal features of PD are bradykinesia, tremors, rigidity, and postural instability [5]. Patients suffering from PD are frequently disturbed by the motor symptoms of PD in daily functions , activities, and roles [6].…”
