Margarita I. Khmyz
et al.

Abstract: Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) mediate the majority of excitatory neurotransmission and are implicated in various neurological disorders. In this review, we discuss the role of the two fastest iGluRs subtypes, namely, α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) and kainate receptors, in the pathogenesis and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Although both AMPA and kainate receptors represent promising therapeutic targets for the treatment of … Show more

“…Glutamatergic neurotransmission is responsible for many cognitive, motor, sensory, and autonomic nervous activities [ 220 , 221 , 222 ]. Neuroexcitotoxicity induced by glutamate has been demonstrated in a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including PD [ 223 , 224 , 225 , 226 , 227 ], epilepsy [ 228 , 229 ], traumatic brain injury [ 230 , 231 ], MS [ 232 , 233 , 234 ], AD [ 223 , 224 , 235 , 236 ], HD [ 223 , 237 , 238 , 239 ], ALS [ 223 , 239 , 240 ], etc.…”
