Parity-violating gravity and GW170817 in non-Riemannian cosmology

Abstract: The cosmological propagation of tensor perturbations is studied in the context of parityviolating extensions of the symmetric teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity theory. This non-Riemannian formulation allows for a wider variety of consistent extensions than the metric formulation of gravity theory. It is found that while many of the possible quadratic terms do not influence the propagation of the gravitational waves, a generic modification predicts a signature that distinguishes the left-and right-h… Show more

“…In these four parameters, µ A and μ determine the speed of GWs, while ν A and ν determine the damping rate of GWs during their propagation. As shown in [54], such parametrization provides an unifying description for the low-energy effective description of GWs in generic modified gravities, including Chern-Simons modified gravity [40], ghost-free parity violating scalar-tensor theory [31,39,44], symmetric teleparallel equivalence of general relativity [49], Hořava-Lifshitz gravities [17][18][19][20][21][22], the Nieh-Yan modified teleparallel gravity [50,51].…”

“…Various implications of parity violations on the gravitational waves have been extensively explored in [40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48]. Note that in [49][50][51][52], a parity-violating effects induced by lower dimemnsion operators have also been proposed and their phenomenological effects have been explored.…”
