Parity nonconservation in the radiative recombination of electrons with heavy hydrogen-like ions

Abstract: The parity nonconservation effect on the radiative recombination of electrons with heavy hydrogen-like ions is studied. Calculations are performed for the recombination into the 21S0 state of helium-like thorium and gadolinium, where, due to the near-degeneracy of the opposite-parity 21S0 and 23P0 states, the effect is strongly enhanced. Two scenarios for possible experiments are studied. In the first scenario, the electron beam is assumed to be fully polarized while the H-like ions are unpolarized, and the po… Show more

“…To accomplish this, a strong Doppler broadening, caused by the angle variation of the photon emission from the relativistic projectile, has been compensated by the granularity of the photon detectors and by a large number of readout channels. The experiment for the first time allows to study alignment of the excited states produced by RR where the photon emission direction is observed [1,2]. Thus it represents a significant step towards the complete experiment of RR as well as of the photoelectric effect in time reversal.…”

“…[53], where it was proposed to use close opposite-parity levels 2 1 S 0 and 2 3 P 1 in He-like ions for Z ≈ 6 and Z ≈ 29. Later, most of the authors [54][55][56][57][58][59] exploited the near-degeneracy of the 2 1 S 0 and 2 3 P 0 states in He-like ions at Z ≈ 64 and Z ≈ 90, where the PNC effects are strongly enhanced. In particular, in Ref.…”
